ISA Celebration fundraiser for Backpack Program

The Indian Student Association (ISA) at Murray State University will host a celebration event focusing on traditions of their heritage on Nov. 14 at the MSU Curris Center. The event will begin at 6 p.m. in the Ballroom. All proceeds raised will benefit the Backpack Program, ISA’s designated community service project for 2008. The event is also planned to honor Jim Baurer, who has served as director of the Curris Center since 1990.

Bluegrass legend Del McCoury Band in concert at MSU’s Lovett Auditorium Nov. 7

Forty-five years after serving an apprenticeship with Bill Monroe, the man known as the King of Bluegrass, Del McCoury has become a legend in his own right and packing in more fans than ever at his concerts. What may seem surprising to some is that the chairs are not only filled by fans that have followed his career since his first album, but also by a strong showing of “Del Heads,” college students and members of the younger generation that are intrigued by the music of his band.

Alltech founder Dr. Pearse Lyons to speak at Murray State University

Dr. Pearse Lyons, founder and president of Alltech Biotechnology, will speak at Murray State University on Monday, Nov. 10. The event includes an Alltech-sponsored meal 11:30 a.m., in the Curris Center Ballroom, followed by a presentation by Dr. Lyons at noon. Murray State University’s School of Agriculture and the Agriculture Leadership Council are responsible for bringing Lyons to the MSU campus to share the Alltech vision with residents in this region.

Indian Nite Celebration at Curris Center Friday

Indian Nite, a celebration of traditions and culture presented by the Indian Student Association at Murray State University, will be held Friday, Nov. 14 at the MSU Curris Center. The event will begin at 6 p.m. in the ballroom. All proceeds raised will benefit ISA’s Be-the-Change initiatives, specifically the Backpack Program, the organization’s designated community service project for this school term.

Chinese Diplomat He Xiangdong is scheduled to speak at Murray State University on Wednesday, Nov. 19 at 7 p.m., in the Curris Center Theatre as part of the university’s annual International Week festivities. Xiangdong serves as counselor for congressional affairs with the Chinese Embassy in Washington, D.C. His speech will focus on several topics of interest including the success that China has experienced in the 21st century, the recent Olympic Games, relations between China and the United States, the Chinese economy and a look into what may be coming in the future.

33rd annual College Rodeo opens Thursday at Cherry Expo Center

The chutes are up and college athletes from all around the Ozark Region are set to mount their horses as they compete in one of America’s oldest sports this weekend at Murray State University’s Bill Cherry Agriculture Expo Center. The 33rd annual Murray State College Rodeo opens Thursday, Nov. 20 at 7 p.m. This year’s event features three action-packed evening performances Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Nov. 20-22, as well as a matinee performance at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 23.

MSU Readies for December 2008 Commencement

MURRAY, Ky., Dec. 5 — Murray State University is nearing the close of its Fall 2008 semester and the university’s annual December Commencement Exercises and Investiture Ceremony. Commencement will be held on Saturday, Dec. 13, at 10 a.m. in the Regional Special Events Center (RSEC) on campus. The university invites families and friends of graduates to attend the ceremony.

MSU school of ag hosts 5th annual Soybean Promotion Day at RSEC

Soybean Promotion Day 2009, a joint production of Murray State University’s school of agriculture and the Kentucky Soybean Promotion Board, will be held Tuesday, Jan. 13, 4-8 p.m., at the Regional Special Events Center in Murray. This fifth annual event features a sponsored meal and four hours of the latest news and information tips for farmers and agribusiness leaders throughout Murray State’s service region. The event and meal are free, however anyone planning to attend is asked to pre-register by calling (270) 809-3556 or sending an email to rhea.wright@murraystate.edu no later than Friday, Jan. 9.

Author Ned Vizzini, keynote speaker for New Student Convocation, to hold book signing

Murray State University adopted the Freshman Reading Experience in 2002 inviting freshman to read the same book and be ready for discussion at Great Beginnings. The goal of the program is to find something that students can relate to and have in common when they arrive on campus.

This year’s featured selection is, It’s Kind of a Funny Story, by author Ned Vizzini. Inspired by the author’s own experience, It’s Kind of a Funny Story tells the story of Craig Gilner’s acceptance into a prestigious and competitive pre-professional school and his subsequent response to overwhelming pressure. When Craig becomes depressed and then suicidal, he checks himself into a psychiatric wing of a local hospital and in the process, rediscovers abilities and options he didn’t realize he had.

MSU violin faculty presents solo recital

Come and enjoy a pleasant afternoon of classical masterpieces including the works of Handel, Bartok and Strauss performed by MSU violin faculty member Sue-Jean Park.

Park will present a solo violin recital accompanied by pianist, Jacob Clark, on the campus of Murray State University in the Doyle Fine Arts Center’s Performing Arts Hall at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 21.

The recital is free and open to the public.
